Introduction
Yesterday Japan Airlines and Marriott announced the launch of “a strategic travel loyalty partnership to deliver exclusive benefits to members across both air travel and hotel stays”.
The joint press release introduced “For the first time, all Marriott Bonvoy members will automatically receive FLY ON Points when they link their accounts, without taking a flight. The number of FLY ON Points credited will depend on a member’s Marriott Bonvoy elite status.”
Better yet, based on the benefits table provided in the press release, this benefit appears to be annual!

Table of Benefits for Marriott Bonvoy Members:

Simple Instructions to Link Accounts and Earn Points:
You will need to have an account with both Marriott Bonvoy and Japan Airlines to link them. This article assumes you already have a Marriott Bonvoy account. If not, an account is easy to create.
To create an account with Japan Airlines, browse the internet to open their home page, or use this link:
JAL Mileage Bank – Earn, Redeem Miles - JAPAN AIRLINES (JAL)
Select Join from the top menu.
Follow the prompts to create an account.
Once the account is created, Log In to your Marriott Bonvoy account.
Select Earn Points, then select Earn With Airline Partners from the dropdown menu.

Scroll down to Japan Airlines, and select Link Accounts.

You’re done! It may take a few minutes, but when you next log into your Japan Airlines account, you will see the miles posted to your account.
Max’s Take:
This simple allegiance benefit, generating FLY ON points annually, appears too good to be true. Membership benefits with both Marriott Bonvoy and Japan Airlines can change at a moment’s notice, so it will be interesting to see if the allegiance benefits remain unchanged over time. Even if the benefit isn’t annual, the initial benefit for taking a couple of minutes to link the accounts pretty sweet.
Depending on your lifestyle, it might be worth enhancing your Marriott Bonvoy status to maximize this benefit. Aside from hotel loyalty and frequent stays, Silver Elite, Gold Elite, or Platinum Elite status can be achieved through having the appropriate Marriott Bonvoy credit card, though they carry annual fees of $95, $250, and $650 respectively. In addition, the American Express Platinum card brings with it Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status and charges an annual fee of $895.
Each of the credit cards bring benefits well above and beyond the Bonvoy status and might be worth the annual fee for you.
